Getting a manicure or a pedicure is like playing Russian roulette. If you’re not careful, you could end up with a nasty fungal nail infection that could ruin your nails!This warning comes from Dr. Marta J. VanBeek, assistant professor, Department of Dermatology at the University of Iowa College of Medicine in Iowa City, who said that while most nail salons conscientiously keep their places clean, some are perfect breeding grounds of stubborn fungi that can compromise your health.

“Look at the salon with cleanliness in mind and ask yourself these questions: Are the stations clean? Does the nail technician wash her hands between clients? Are there dirty implements lying around? If the salon does not appear clean, then move on," VanBeek said.

Her advice is timely considering the growth of the salon industry that serves millions of people worldwide. In 1995 alone, Americans spent an estimated $5.2 billion on nail services, half a billion more than in 1994, according to the Nails 1995 Fact Book. During that time, there were over 34,000 nails salons across the country – an increase of 2,000 over the previous year.

Today, there are more than 50,000 nail salons in the United States with women (and some men) spending more than $6 billion a year on nail care and cosmetics. That figure doesn’t include the number of beauty salons that offer nail services.

People often go to these salons for artificial nails which are the most requested service, the Fact Book said. At the No. 2 slot are manicures followed by nail jewelry and nail art. Unfortunately, these beauty services harbor an ugly secret: they can give you a bad case of fungal nail infections that are common in the elderly and can spread rapidly from one family member to another.

Removing the cuticle is usually the first step in getting a manicure or a pedicure. New York dermatologists Drs. Herbert P. Goodheart of Mount Sinai Hospital and Hendrik Uyttendaele of Columbia University Medical Center said this is not a good idea since it can lead to inflammation and infections of the surrounding tissue and nail root, and cause permanent nail deformities.

"The cuticle is a barrier that protects the skin and the delicate nail matrix, or 'root' of the nail. Pushing back on the cuticle can injure it and expose the paronychium or skin fold around the nail, to bacteria and result in infection," VanBeek said.

Unclean instruments are another cause for concern. While the states regulate their respective salons and their technicians, they can’t always monitor what’s happening in your area unless something goes wrong. And often it does. In 2000, over 100 infections were traced to footbaths used in nail salons.

“Unclean implements are especially dangerous if the skin around the nail is broken. This can occur with overzealous manicuring - if, for example, too much of the cuticle is cut or pushed back too far. If the cuticle is cut or separated from the fingernail, infectious agents can get into the exposed area,” explained Paula Kurtzweil of the US Food and Drug Administration.

To avoid trouble, see your doctor at the first sign of infection. Many antifungal medications are available but they are generally expensive, contain harsh chemicals that can do more harm than good, and may affect your heart and your liver. Well, that's a very good question. The warmer isn't for the manicure, and it isn't used in an everyday to day basic manicure. A manicure warmer is for the giving of that very special manicure. This special type of manicure is a spa manicure. A spa manicure, is a little more expensive than its basic counterpart, but is very much worth the splurge to treat yourself every now and again.

The manicure warmer is actually used to warm wax which is used to give a spa manicure. The paraffin wax is heated and melted by the warmer. The wax is then smothered onto the hands of this lucky client. This wax will also acts as a moisturizer. It will moisture and replace essential oils that we loose through every day life, especially through hand washing. The wax will help to temporarily reduce fine lines leaving hands looking younger and softer and rough hands will appear smoother. If you continue to do this regularly your hands will continue to look younger, due to the softening of the skin.

Once the wax has melted and been applied the client she/he is left to relax and wait for the wax to set. The wax doesn't harden into a complete solid form. It's not like the wax of a candle or crayon, and it's also a very thin layer, and is easily removed by a gentle rubbing motion. Once the wax has been heated and applied the manicure warmer is no longer needed. There are many different types of manicure warmers.

Some of these warmers have disposable cups that allow for easy cleaning, while others have to be cleaned daily and emptied. And if you have ever tried to clean up melted wax, you know that this is not a very pleasant task to do.

Manicure warmers can also be used for other purposes in our beauty shops. Nail polish removing:

Take cotton balls as many as you need them, soak each finger well with nail polish remover, so that your fingernails true color start appearing. Use a very less quantity of nail polish remover to remove the nail polish. Since nail polish is extremely drying, never soak the nail in it, especially the cuticle. Keep the good contacts of your nails with the nail polish.

Soaking and removing cuticles:

Your cuticle is like a fore skin. It is found at the bottom of your nail, where finger nail cartilage and skin meets. To remove cuticle, soak your nail in warm water for 3 minutes or less. Now use cartilage remover to push the cuticle down.

Trimming your fingernails:

To trim out toenails, use nail clippers. To reshape or shorten nails, simply use nail clippers. If your nails are hard, soak them in water before trimming. If you have soft nails, do not trim after bathing or washing, because in doing so you may cause damage, which sometime may lead to infection. Do not cut too short toenails, because doing so increase the chances of developing ingrown toenails.

Filling Nails:

Use emery board to make your fingernails smooth and good looking. You can use emery board to smoothen the ends of your fingernails. Do not use emery board to scrap your natural nail surface at all. This will make the nails surface rough.

Exfoliating & Moisturizing Hands and Feet:

Now use sugar wash to massage your feet, legs, arms and feet. Rinse your hands first and then use pumice stone to rub away callus and other rough surfaces on the bottom of your feet. Now, rinse the scrub of your feet and legs. Now, use moisturizer or some other soothing cream for your hands and feet that may heal a cracked and roughdry skin.

Polishing Nails:

Remove excess moisturizer using polish remover. Polish your nails and dry them between coats, preferably minimum of four coats. If you have weak or brittle nails, place one or two coats of ridge filling nail polish on the nail as base coat to shore up the nail. Two coats of a colored nail polish are next, followed by a topcoat to add luster. Use foam toe separators to fingers, while polishing. Allow drying the polish.

Ready to begin?
1. Soak cotton wool with nail polish remover and remove all traces of the old nail polish from your nails.

2. Wash your hands and nails with soap and water. Scrub under the nails with a nail brush or an old toothbrush. Rinse thoroughly and dry completely.

3. File your nails to the length and shape you desire. Use a good nail file to achieve the effect you want.

4. Apply base nail coat that in 3 strokes down your nails. 1st stroke down the center and one stroke on each side of the nail.

5. When the base coat is completely dry, apply the pink nail polish from base of the nail to just where the white crescent begins. Do that carefully in 3 strokes.

6. Erase any mistakes with a remover and a cotton bud.

7. Once the pink polish is dry, apply the white polish as a crescent across the nail, where the pink polish ends.

8. Once the nail polish is completely dry, apply a protective layer of clear varnish, or top coat over the entire nail to protect your work.

9. Let your nails dry completely before you touch anything.

Items you require to perform manicure:

* A Bowl of luke warm soapy water

* scrub lotion

* Preferbaly petroleum jelly or any other moisturizing lotion
cuticle pusher

* Your favorite nail polish colour and clear polish

* Nail polish remover (if your nails are coloured at the moment)

* Clean white towel

Steps to a manicure:

* Before starting make sure you remove your nail polish and have all the required items mentioned above. Also remove any jewelry on fingers.

* First trim or shape nails as you desire

* Soak both hands in luke warm soapy water for 4 to 6 minutes.

* Push cuticles back gently with towel or cuticle pusher " stick".

* Rub hands with a homemade scrub or any other scrub lotion to exfoliate skin.

* Apply petroleum jelly or any other moisturizing lotion on hands.
Cover with glovesand leave on for about 5 minutes.

* Paint nails. Make sure to apply at least two coats of nail polish and a top coat of clear nail polish to give it more shine. Give it enough time to dry.
